The original Lucene Web Service began as a project undertaken by Robert Kaye and sponsored by CD Baby.
In its current state, the Lucene Web Service is a completely new application, rewritten from the ground up by Adam Paynter and Brian Cassidy of the National Adult Literacy Database. Motivating the project was a need to have the Perl programming language interfacing with Lucene indices.
